What is your hometown? Pittsburgh, PA听

What inspired you to pursue a career in acupuncture and Chinese medicine or Won Buddhist听Studies?听
Prior to grad school, I spent many years working in reproductive healthcare, where helping people gave me great satisfaction but left me severely burnt out. In a conversation about my future goals, my therapist curiously suggested acupuncture as a career path. That same evening, my online research led me to discovering 黑料社 which led me to an open house that was scheduled a few days from then. I drove from Pittsburgh to Warminster feeling like my life was already shifting. Once I attended the open house, my heart was set on learning as much as I could about Chinese medicine. I know now that the learning will never stop. That’s the greatest blessing.听

What facet of the medicine or program are you currently passionate about?
I am passionate about the Vital Energy elective course that Reverend Song leads. I couldn’t get enough of his wonderful energy from weekly morning meditation class and all the professors encourage the students to develop a strong qigong practice. This course allows me to bridge stronger connections between what I am learning in lab, in books, and with developing my own energetic capacities.

How do you hope to impact the world around you as a Chinese medicine practitioner or听practitioner of Won Buddhism?听
I hope to impact the world around me as a Chinese medicine practitioner by offering my ability to be present in the moment with the people I am with. It is a common complaint in Western medicine that patients lack the necessary amount of time with their practitioners. Part of the healing process from dis-ease is sourced from compassion. When I devote my time to helping a person feel heard and seen, I am doing exactly what I am meant to do with that time.

My favorite thing about studying at the 黑料社 is my cohort. It can be daunting to re-enter school as a working adult. From new student orientation, friendships developed immediately and have only strengthened. I love the minds who learn alongside mine. They help me learn at such a deeper level. There's a lot of laughter in my class. We're a special group.

What inspired you to pursue a career in acupuncture and Chinese medicine or Won Buddhist Studies?
In 2015, I became a massage therapist, driven by a passion to help clients feel their best. While building a thriving practice, I continually expanded my skills through advanced training to provide even more effective care. This led me to become an instructor at the Pittsburgh School of Massage Therapy, where I taught Business, Marketing, and Massage Therapy. During this time, I also achieved national board certification through the NCBTMB. I found great joy in inspiring my students to embrace lifelong learning and strive for excellence. This experience prompted me to ask, “What’s next? How can I further grow and better serve my clients?” Exploring various options, I discovered that Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perfectly aligned with my goals and the needs of my community. I recognized a significant opportunity in the Pittsburgh market for this holistic approach to healthcare. I appreciate that acupuncture and TCM consider the whole person, addressing the root cause of imbalances rather than simply treating symptoms. Now immersed in the program, I’m also excited to pursue the herbal certificate, adding another valuable dimension to my skillset.
What facet of the medicine or program are you currently passionate about?
I’m drawn to the whole acupuncture program at the Won because of the many different ways we learn to support healing. I’m fascinated by the interconnectedness of acupuncture, herbs, nutrition, meditation, Tuina, and movement practices(and more). This program isn’t just teaching me how to treat patients; it’s also helping me grow as a person. I learn something new in every class, and it just makes me more excited about my future as a practitioner.
How do you hope to impact the world around you as a Chinese medicine practitioner or practitioner of Won Buddhism?
My greatest hope as a Chinese medicine practitioner is to bring compassion and hope to my community. I want to offer a healing modality that truly listens to patients and addresses the root causes of their ailments, not just the surface symptoms. I believe everyone deserves to feel heard, understood, and empowered in their healthcare journey. I want to be a source of support and a catalyst for positive change in the lives of those I serve.

One of my favorite things about 黑料社, is that each instructor brings their own unique experiences, treatment approaches, and areas of specialization to the classroom. This allows us to learn from a wide range of viewpoints and develop our own understanding of acupuncture and TCM. Their passion for the profession is contagious, and their willingness to share their knowledge is truly appreciated.

Amy Ip

DAc Class of 2026

I was inspired to pursue a career in acupuncture and Chinese medicine when trying to get help with my own health issues. I was seen by various healthcare practitioners, and I was not getting any results or relief. I ended up trying acupuncture, and I felt a lot better just from the one treatment. Eventually, I kept going back to receive treatment, and my acupuncturist knew that I was very fascinated about it and began telling me about her wonderful experience at the 黑料社 of Graduate Studies (her alma mater). I shortly began shadowing my acupuncturist to immerse myself in the field, and see if this was something I would like to pursue. After shadowing my acupuncturist, I quickly realized this was something I was passionate about. I have always been in the healthcare field, and helping others is what it very self-fulfilling to me. My goal is to be able to help others with Chinese medicine and acupuncture, just as it helped myself with my own health issues.

I enjoy having a small class size because whenever I am in the lab--it is always very accessible to find a teaching assistant or instructor when I have a question.

Monica McGrow

Alumni - dac class of 2025

Monica embarked on her journey helping others with a master鈥檚 degree and certification in both elementary and special education. After 10 years of experience teaching in public schools, she could not help but notice the negative effects of stress on the mind and body among a growing number of close family members, friends, and colleagues. Drawn to acupuncture and its ability to help manage stress and its effects, Monica turned her efforts to helping people in a new capacity by applying to 黑料社 of Graduate Studies, where she is completing her master鈥檚 degree in acupuncture in August 2024 and her doctorate in acupuncture in August 2025. In addition to providing heart-felt, patient-centered, and evidence-based integrative care, another one of Monica’s main goals is to increase acupuncture awareness and accessibility through increased education and visibility.听

"Won's program is comprehensive, covering Eastern and Western medicine; traditional Chinese medicine and 5 element acupuncture; as well as specialties such as auricular acupuncture, scalp acupuncture, Koryo-hand acupuncture, Shonishin pediatric acupuncture, and so much more.."
