Won Meditation for Inner Peace

(Synchronous Online course)
Duration: 10 Weeks – Every Tuesday
COURSE OVERVIEW
The Won Meditation for Inner Peace program is designed to guide students on a journey toward stillness by releasing attachment and cultivating a deep sense of inner peace. Through a combination of sitting meditation, breath work, chanting meditation, and qigong, students will develop a balanced and grounded meditation practice. This course will be the first step toward the Won Meditation Facilitator training program. To receive the 2 units of WBS Continuing Education , certificate of completion, you need to satisfactorily complete 40 hours requirements; personal practice 20 hours (2 hours per week or appropriate length retreat related with the course topics), Mindful Journaling 5 hours (0.5 hours for 10 weeks), Lecture and class time 15 hours (1.5 hours for 10 weeks) Each practice will focus on quieting the mind and releasing mental clutter, helping individuals reach a place of calm clarity. After experiencing the realm of inner peace, students can practice bringing that inner peace into the outer world.
Week 1: Won Meditation Opening

Week 2: Breath
Strengthen the mind and body connection
鈼 Understand the role of breath in meditation
鈼 Use the breath to return the body and mind to their original, relaxed state
Week 3: Sound Meditation
Calming wandering thoughts
鈼 Understand the concept of silence and sound
鈼 Experience both pleasant and unpleasant sounds and reflect on why they are received
that way
Week 4: Chanting Meditation
Return to a single mind with just one chant
鈼 Learn chanting meditation uses and traditional chants
鈼 Understand common principles linking sitting and chanting meditation
Week 5: Moving Meditation
Act in harmony from a grounded center
鈼 Understand the principle and utility of moving meditation
鈼 Improve mind-body connection with body scan meditation and movement
Week 6: Seated Meditation: Posture and Breath
Harmony during meditation and daily life
鈼 Develop strong understanding of posture in meditation and daily life
鈼 Learn various hand mudras designed for comfortable meditation
Week 7: Seated Meditation 2: Meditation and Energy
Mind and energy settle in the lower abdomen, refreshing the spirit

鈼 Cultivate deep relaxation and presence
Week 8: Seated Meditation 3: Calm and Alert Mind
The mind is ever calm and alert
鈼 Develop deep calmness while enhancing alertness and presence

Week 9: Timeless and Placeless Meditation
Your life is your practice
鈼 Understand the principle of timeless and placeless meditation
鈼 Identify the challenges of maintaining mindfulness in daily life

About The Instructors

Brian Freer
Brian Freer is a dedicated meditation teacher with over 15 years of experience, offering a unique and engaging approach to mindfulness. He is also one of the first Wonmunim, or Won Buddhist lay ministers in the USA. With a deep commitment to helping others find peace and clarity, Brian shares meditation techniques in a natural, accessible, and fun way. His goal is to remove the separation between practice and daily life and guide others to reveal their own inner peace, which they can then bring out into the world. Brian鈥檚 full-time career is in cancer research, where he aspires to help discover therapies for others suffering from debilitating diseases. Combining the analytical skills developed in the lab with a compassionate approach to mindfulness, Brian brings a well-rounded perspective to meditation instruction, using many scientific or modern analogies to help make practice less abstract and more practical. He鈥檚 excited to continue to learn and practice together during this course.
Rev. Hojin Park
Rev. Hojin Park is an ordained Won Buddhist minister, Dharma Chaplain and faculty at Won Institute of Graduate Studies. She obtained her doctorate Degree in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University in Maryland, her Masters in Applied Meditation Studies at the 黑料社 of Graduate Studies in Pennsylvania and her Masters in Won Buddhist Studies at the WonKwang University in South Korea. Meditation practice has been a part of her life since childhood, as she grew up in a Won-Buddhist family. She has a particular interest in guiding young people toward spiritual growth and inner peace. Over the years, she has been teaching Buddhism and meditation to college students. Rev. Hojin currently leads the "Learning to Live Mindfully" group online every week, focusing on mindful life and meditation practice rooted in the teachings of Won-Buddhism. Through meditation and mindfulness practice, She hopes to help others cultivate a healthy and happy life, both physically and mentally, as we journey together on this path of self-discovery and growth.

About The Instructor
Rev. WonGong (she/her), affectionately known as Rev. Wow!, is a lifetime dedicated dharma teacher. A pioneering Won Buddhist priest, she has established temples in Chapel Hill and Raleigh, North Carolina. She is a guest lecturer at schools, colleges, and meditation centers, teaching Buddhist philosophy and meditation to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Rev. Wow! leads workshops, retreats, youth dharma camps, and cultural enrichment programs. She integrates creative forms of meditation with body movement, vocal Qigong, breathing techniques, guided meditation, and laughter. She is active in the international interfaith community and is a leading Korean-to-English translator of dharma teachings, serving as a spiritual bridge between East and West.
Rev. Wow! is a master of integrating Buddhist concepts in daily practice. She loves gardening and singing. In 2018, she released an album, Chants of Samadhi for Daily Practice. In 2020, she released her second album, Chants for Healing
